Common reasons a PC won’t turn on
A completely dead PC is almost always one of four things: a failed power supply unit (PSU), a blown fuse in the mains plug, a faulty wall socket or surge protector, or a motherboard fault. Before assuming the worst, our engineer checks the simple causes first — many no-power calls turn out to be a £1 fuse or a tripped extension lead.
Power supply failure (PSU)
The PSU converts mains power into the voltages your components need. PSUs fail silently — one day they just stop. We test your PSU under load with a dedicated tester and either replace it or confirm it is good before moving on to other components. A quality replacement PSU typically costs £35–£70 depending on wattage and brand.
Motherboard POST failure
If the PSU is fine but the system still won’t POST (Power-On Self-Test), the fault is usually on the motherboard — failed capacitors, a corrupted BIOS, or a short from a loose standoff screw. We inspect the board visually for bulging or leaking capacitors, re-seat all connectors, and attempt a CMOS reset. Where the board is repairable we fix it; where it is not, we quote for a compatible replacement and handle the data transfer.
RAM or GPU preventing boot
A single faulty RAM stick or a graphics card seated incorrectly can prevent a PC from posting entirely. We reseat and test memory modules individually, check GPU seating and power connectors, and isolate the fault systematically. This is a straightforward bench test that typically takes under an hour.
CMOS battery failure
Older PCs sometimes fail to boot because the CMOS coin cell battery has died, causing the BIOS to lose its settings and loop on startup. Replacing the CR2032 battery and resetting BIOS defaults resolves this in minutes and costs very little.
What to do before bringing your PC in
Check the obvious first: try a different wall socket, inspect the fuse in the plug (13A UK plug, thin wire inside), and make sure the PSU rocker switch on the back of the tower is set to ON. If none of that helps, do not keep pressing the power button repeatedly — bring it in and let us diagnose it properly to avoid causing further damage.
