Motherboard repair — what we cover
Failed or bulging capacitors
Electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard age and fail, causing system instability, random reboots, and eventual complete failure. Bulging or leaking capacitors are visible to the naked eye. Where accessible, we can replace individual capacitors at the component level — a much more cost-effective solution than full board replacement. Where the fault is too complex for component-level repair, we source a compatible replacement board and handle the full rebuild and data transfer.
BIOS corruption and recovery
A failed BIOS update, power cut during flashing, or CMOS battery failure can leave a motherboard unable to POST at all. We attempt BIOS recovery using the manufacturer’s crisis recovery method or a hardware programmer where necessary, without replacing the board. If recovery is not possible, we advise on the best path forward.
POST failure diagnosis
If your PC powers on but does not reach the Windows login screen — no display, or a continuous beep code — we systematically isolate the fault. This involves stripping the system to minimal components (CPU, one RAM stick, integrated graphics), reading any diagnostic LED codes on the board, and working outward to identify whether the fault is the board itself or a connected component causing the board to halt.
Physical damage and short circuits
Dropped PCs, liquid spills reaching the board, or incorrect installation of components can cause shorts or physical damage to traces. We inspect under magnification and assess whether the damage is repairable. Not every board can be saved, but we always tell you honestly before recommending replacement.
PSU (power supply) repair and replacement
We test your existing PSU under load to confirm whether it is the source of your fault. A failing PSU can cause random shutdowns, instability under load, or complete no-power symptoms. We stock a range of quality replacement PSUs (Corsair, be quiet!, Seasonic) and can fit a like-for-like replacement the same day in most cases. If your system needs a higher-wattage PSU to support upgraded components, we advise on the correct specification.
How much does motherboard or PSU repair cost?
PSU replacement starts from approximately £55 including parts and labour. Component-level repairs (capacitors, BIOS recovery) are quoted on inspection. Board replacement including rebuild and data migration is quoted once we have confirmed the fault and sourced a compatible part. All pricing is provided in writing before any chargeable work begins.
