Is it safe to send an infected laptop by post?

Yes — a virus or malware infection is a software problem confined to your laptop. It cannot spread via the postal service or affect other devices in our workshop. We handle infected machines as a routine part of our service and have procedures in place to ensure your laptop is fully isolated and cleaned before being reconnected to any network. Sending an infected laptop by post is completely safe.

Signs your laptop has a virus or malware

Common signs include: the laptop running much slower than usual, unfamiliar programmes appearing in the taskbar or starting on boot, your browser opening to a different homepage or showing unwanted adverts, pop-up warnings claiming your computer is infected (often fake, designed to scare you into clicking), your antivirus being disabled or reporting it cannot update, unusually high CPU or network activity when the laptop is idle, or — in the case of ransomware — files being renamed with an unusual extension and a ransom demand appearing on screen.

What we do during a mail-in virus removal

Offline boot scan

Many malware types are specifically designed to hide from antivirus software while Windows is running. We boot your laptop from an external drive running a dedicated offline scanner — bypassing Windows entirely — so the malware has nowhere to hide. This catches infections that a standard Windows-based antivirus scan would miss.

Full system scan and manual removal

We run multiple scanning tools (including Malwarebytes, ESET Online Scanner, and others) and manually inspect startup entries, scheduled tasks, browser extensions, and the hosts file for signs of compromise. Automated scanners catch the majority of infections; manual inspection catches the persistent remnants that scanners miss.

Browser reset and cleanup

Many infections target your browser — hijacking your homepage, installing rogue extensions, and redirecting searches. We reset all browsers to clean defaults, remove any extensions that should not be there, and verify that your search engine and homepage settings are correct after reset.

Security hardening

After removing the infection, we address the conditions that allowed it to take hold: enabling Windows Defender properly, installing and configuring a reputable antivirus if one is not present, ensuring Windows and all software is updated, and checking that your browser’s built-in phishing and malware protection is active. We also advise on the specific vector by which your laptop was infected — whether it was a phishing email, a fake software download, or another route — so you can avoid it in future.

Ransomware — do not pay before calling us

If your files have been encrypted by ransomware and you are considering paying the ransom, please call us first on 07958 468 173. In many cases — particularly with older or less sophisticated ransomware strains — recovery is possible through Windows Shadow Copies, backup restoration, or known decryptors, without paying anything. Even where full recovery is not possible, we can often retrieve unencrypted files and help you understand the full extent of the damage. Our emergency data recovery service is available for urgent situations.

What about my personal data?

We do not access your personal files, documents, photos, or emails unless it is directly necessary for the repair — for example, checking that your Documents folder is accessible after a ransomware recovery. We never copy, read, or retain personal data. Your files are your business. If you have concerns, you can create a separate Windows user account before sending and set it as the primary account for our use — we are happy to work within whatever access level you are comfortable with.

Pricing and turnaround

Mail-in virus and malware removal starts from £45. Ransomware recovery and data retrieval is quoted individually depending on the infection and extent of damage. Turnaround is typically 1–2 working days from arrival. Return delivery by DPD tracked courier is invoiced separately at cost. Diagnosis is always free — if we cannot resolve the infection, you pay nothing.
