If your laptop has just been soaked, splashed, or dropped in water, the most important thing to know right now is this: do not switch it on. Not even to check if it’s still working. Not even for a second. Powering on a wet laptop is the single action most likely to turn a recoverable situation into a permanent one. The good news is that in the majority of cases, your data — your files, photos, documents, everything — can be recovered even when the laptop itself cannot be saved. Read on to find out why, and what to do right now.
What Happens to Your Data When a Laptop Gets Wet
There’s an important distinction that most people don’t realise: the laptop’s circuits and the data stored on your drive are two very different things. When water gets inside a laptop, it causes short circuits across the motherboard, power circuitry, and components. This can destroy the laptop’s ability to function — but it doesn’t necessarily touch your data.
Your files are stored on either a hard drive (HDD) or a solid-state drive (SSD). Both are physically separate from the laptop’s main circuitry. Hard drives store data on spinning magnetic platters sealed inside a metal casing; SSDs store data on flash memory chips on a circuit board. In both cases, water damage to the laptop chassis doesn’t automatically mean the storage device is destroyed. The data is typically the last thing to die — and often it doesn’t die at all.
The danger comes when the laptop is powered on while water is still present. This forces electrical current through wet components, causing corrosion and burning out circuits — including, potentially, the storage device itself. This is why the first 60 seconds matter so much.
The First 60 Seconds — What to Do Right Now
If the spill just happened, here’s exactly what to do:
- Power off immediately. If the laptop is on, hold the power button down until it shuts off. Don’t wait for it to go through a normal shutdown — just hold and cut the power.
- Remove the battery if you can. On older laptops with removable batteries, take it out straight away. On modern slim laptops, the battery is internal — don’t attempt to open the chassis yourself, just ensure the laptop is off.
- Unplug everything. Disconnect the charger, USB devices, and any external cables.
- Turn it upside down. Rest the laptop on a towel in an inverted V-shape (like a tent) to let any pooled water drain away from the internals.
- Do not use a hairdryer. The heat can damage internal components and drive moisture deeper into the circuitry. Leave it to air dry at room temperature.
- Do not put it in rice. The “bag of rice” trick is a persistent myth. Uncooked rice does not effectively draw moisture from electronics and can introduce starch dust and debris into ports. It’s a waste of time when time matters.
- Call a professional. The sooner you bring the device to us, the better your chances of a full data recovery. Ring us on 07958 468 173 or visit our emergency data recovery page.
Can the Data Really Be Recovered?
In most cases, yes — and often with a very high success rate. The key variable is whether the laptop was powered on after the spill.
When we receive a water-damaged laptop, the first thing we do is separate the storage device — the hard drive or SSD — from the damaged chassis entirely. We assess it independently, away from the wet or corroded components. In the majority of cases, the drive itself is physically undamaged and the data is fully intact. The problem was never with the data; it was with the laptop around it.
If the drive is logically intact (meaning the data is there but may need to be accessed carefully), we can often perform a straightforward recovery. If there has been some physical damage to the drive due to the spill or from being powered on whilst wet, we use more advanced recovery techniques. Either way, we always assess the situation fully before recommending a course of action — and we’ll always be honest with you about the chances of success.
What About the Laptop Itself?
Data recovery and laptop repair are two separate things, and when a laptop has been water-damaged, the priority should always be your data first. Once your files are safe, we can then assess whether the laptop itself is repairable.
Water damage repair on laptops typically involves a full strip-down, ultrasonic cleaning of the motherboard, and replacement of any burnt components. It’s more involved than a standard repair, but it’s often possible — particularly if the laptop was switched off quickly. How We Recover Water-Damaged Drive Data
Our recovery process for water-damaged laptops is methodical and non-destructive. Here’s what it looks like in practice:
- Drive removal. We carefully remove the hard drive or SSD from the laptop chassis and inspect it separately in a controlled environment.
- Drying and inspection. The drive is inspected for visible signs of corrosion, moisture ingress, or physical damage. If the drive has its own exposed circuitry (common in SSDs), it may require cleaning before assessment.
- Diagnostic assessment. We connect the drive in a safe, controlled way to determine whether the failure is logical (software or file system) or physical (hardware damage). This tells us which recovery approach to take.
- Non-destructive recovery. We use professional-grade recovery tools to create a full image of the drive before attempting any recovery. This protects the original drive from further stress and ensures we’re always working from a safe copy.
- File extraction and verification. Your files are extracted, checked, and transferred to a new, safe storage device. We verify the integrity of recovered data before handing it back to you.
Success Rates and Pricing
We believe in being honest about outcomes. Here’s what you can realistically expect:
If you did not power on the laptop after the spill, the success rate for data recovery is high — typically 80% or better. In many cases, the data is fully intact and recovery is straightforward.
If the laptop was powered on after the spill — even briefly, even once — the chances of recovery reduce depending on how much electrical damage occurred. It’s not hopeless, but it does make our job harder. This is why we always say: when in doubt, leave it off.
In terms of cost, logical data recovery (where the drive is physically intact) starts from £80. Physical recovery, which involves more advanced techniques for mechanically or electronically damaged drives, starts from £180. We operate on a strict no data, no fee policy — if we can’t recover your files, you don’t pay for the recovery attempt.
We also offer a free initial diagnosis, so you’ll know exactly what we’re dealing with and what it will cost before committing to anything.
