5 Warning Signs Your Hard Drive Is Failing (And How to Save Your Data)

Losing your data to a failed hard drive is one of the most frustrating tech disasters there is — especially because in most cases, the drive gives plenty of warning before it completely gives up. The problem is most people don’t know what to look for. Here are the five clearest signs your hard drive is on its way out, and what you should do right now.

1. Your Computer Is Running Noticeably Slower

A sudden or gradual slowdown — particularly when opening files, loading programmes, or booting up — is often the first sign of a struggling hard drive. The drive has to work harder to read data from failing sectors, which causes everything to grind. Don’t confuse this with general Windows slowdown; if it’s specifically file and programme access that’s lagging, the drive is the prime suspect.

What to do: Run a SMART diagnostic check (we can do this for you) and back up your data immediately.

2. Strange Clicking, Grinding or Whirring Noises

This is the one that most people recognise. A traditional spinning hard drive (HDD) should be near-silent or produce a very quiet hum. If you start hearing clicking (often called the “click of death”), grinding, or unusual whirring, this is the drive’s read/write head struggling or failing. This is a serious sign — the drive could fail at any moment.

What to do: Stop using the drive. Back up immediately if you can, then bring it to us for assessment. Do not attempt to open the drive yourself — this permanently destroys recovery options.

3. Frequent Crashes, Blue Screens, or Error Messages

If Windows is crashing repeatedly, showing blue screen errors (BSODs) or displaying messages like “SMART failure predicted”, “disk read error”, or “operating system not found” — your hard drive is almost certainly failing. These errors occur when Windows tries to read data from sectors that are damaged or unreadable.

What to do: Note down the exact error message and bring your machine to us. We can often recover data even from drives showing these errors, but time is critical.

4. Files Becoming Corrupted or Disappearing

If files that you know exist are suddenly inaccessible, giving errors when you try to open them, or simply vanishing from folders — this points to bad sectors on the drive. Bad sectors are portions of the disk that can no longer reliably store data. Once a drive starts developing bad sectors, the problem typically accelerates.

What to do: Run CHKDSK (or ask us to) and back up everything you can access right now. Don’t wait.

5. Long Delays Saving or Accessing Files

If saving a document or copying a file suddenly takes 10 times longer than it used to, the drive is struggling to write data reliably. This is particularly noticeable when copying large files or performing Windows updates.

What Should You Do If You Spot These Signs?

The single most important thing you can do is back up your data immediately — even if the backup is slow, even if only some files copy successfully. External hard drives, USB sticks, and cloud services (Google Drive, OneDrive) are all valid options.

Once you’ve backed up what you can, bring the machine to us. At Mojoo Limited, we offer:

  • SMART diagnostics — to assess exactly how close to failure the drive is
  • Data recovery services — we can often retrieve data from drives that Windows can no longer read
  • Drive replacement and cloning — we can clone your failing drive to a new SSD before it dies, preserving all your data and Windows installation
